OUR STORY
Taylor County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1858 from land previously part of Bexar County and a very small portion from Travis County. It is named for Edward Taylor, George Taylor, and James Taylor, three brothers who died at the Battle of the Alamo.
The county did not immediately organize due to a limited population, minimal development and the onset of the Civil War. After the war the population began to grow in the region and the county was officially organized on July 3, 1878 electing the first county officials and naming Buffalo Gap as the County Seat.
As the Texas & Pacific Railroad was built across Texas in 1881, Buffalo Gap lost in its efforts to bring the railroad through their town and it instead went through the northern portions of the county. The T&P established the new town of Abilene in 1881 promising it to be "The Future Great City of West Texas." The County Seat was moved to Abilene in 1883.
